Reminds me, some years ago I'm changing out a hard-drive, and Aaron cautions me, "Be careful, that sheet metal is treacherous!" I push the drive into the slot, and proclaim, "There, No problem!".

Aaron then says, "Check out your finger." Sliced all the way to the bone... didn't even feel it :-( Only time I've ever needed stitches :-(

Genuine IBM AT chassis were the worst for sharp edges, of the thousand or more computers I've worked on. It looked like the dies were dull & worn, but they kept stamping out metal with them.

There are metal and plastic versions and they are sold based on the thickness of the material they are being mounted to.

IIRC, it is referred to as "edge guard". Searches on that yield:

sheet metal edge guard search yields a lot as well.

"Continuous Grommet Edging" is a common reference I saw.

Place the teeth on the outside and the guard strip on the inside.

Rev B and the first are identical. You changed nothing.

The problem was and still is a lack of post processing by the metal workers.

Japanese metallic packaging was/is far better.

By contrast, the enclosures on modern HP 1, 2U and blade server computers are so well designed that all one needs do is move a single lever, and the case is open for upgrades and servicing.

Best design paradigm I have ever seen for rack devices, and electronic hardware in general. It would be cool if they were still part of Agilent and the Agilent boys used these serviceability methods on their instruments as well. Shame it isn't the giant it once was. Now, two giants.

Strange. That what one of the first things I noticed about my 5150 PC, when I got it. Besides being built like a tank, they had done a really good job of rounding edges. I worked on a pile of ATs at work and never noticed overly sharp edges. OTOH, clones tended to be horrible.

I got a batch of them that I had to put duct tape on the edges to make them safe enough to work on. All genuine IBM products. The interesting thing was that all the stamps on the chassis were so blurred you couldn't see who produced them. I saw a few crap imports, but the early IBM was a lot worse. By the time mini towers became popular, I rarely saw a bad stamping.

It's called "grommet" or "grommet material" and in your sketch, you have it inside-out.

That story sent a chill through my sliced finger--ouch. Fortunately mine's already 1/2 mended--not bad at all.

I haven't tried that yet but it ought to be fine. I'm busy grunting out the first units of that 500A (pk) switch of mine. First copper on the pcbs is good, so now it's a matter of packing & shipping.

The switch's R(on) measures 450 microohms at the output terminals. I tested the overload current protection last night. Turn FET array on, blast it with a kA or so. That threw some metal around. Welded a 3mm copper electrode to the bus bars. Twice. The switch took it. Opened on overload, recovered, precharged the load, re-closed, no damage. Life is good.
