Government mandates rear camera

That's why they are disabled when you're in drive. Too many people watch the monitor instead of the road.

You can't have a sense of humor, if you have no sense.

Actually the camera would only be useful for cutting people off ;-)

What I really need is rear-facing Doppler... simply to detect _closing_ vehicles. They're the only ones of potential "interest" ;-) ...Jim Thompson

Here is one for up to 20 meters range. A horn would narrow the beam and give more range. They work at 10.25 GHz, like door openers at retail stores.

They have an IF output that needs amplified to be useful. here are sample circuits online, if you search the part number.

I bought one to test. I'm going to aim it out my driveway and place it where the range ends a couple feet inside the gates. The gates open to 90° and extend four feet into the yard, so no one can enter without being detected.

I would need about 1/2 mile of range to give me time to slow up ;-) ...Jim Thompson

What is the IF frequency? ...Jim Thompson

Audio. Haven't you ever heard the doppler audio from a police radar?

BTW, happy birthday.

I thought that is what rear view mirrors were for. Did you lose monitoring of mirrors by being a lazy driver?

?-)

From the sample circuits, it's just the doppler output, so it depends on the speed of whatever is reflecting the pulse. Basically audio, but it is technically an IF, since it is the output of the mixer.

OK. ...Jim Thompson
