Filter in a USB cable. ..anyone know exactly what is going on here?

I spotted a Cooler Master firewire cable with what looks like a transformer in it. The package indicated it was a filter. I see they have a USB version as well. Does anyone know how this filter/transformer is hooked up. Is this to produce common mode inductance?

It's a solid lump of ferrite with a hole in the middle.

Homer, click on the link. It does look like a transformer, and the description says it uses electroluminescent lighting, so I imagine Eeyore is correct that it's a boost power supply.

"DC12V power input for EL lighting."

Sheesh! They can't even use the USB power supply? Words fail me.

EL needs high voltage I think. [Never messed with it.] Needless to say, I think this is nuts. I don't even like those damn LEDs, let alone cables that glow.

I'm always looking for low EMI cables, so when I see what looks like a transformer, I think filter, not freakin' glow in the dark!
