If I have a zapped micro - with an electron microscope on the die... will I be able to see the differences between electrical over voltage damage and ESD damage.

Depends on the degree of follow-on current damage. ESD can produce visible physical damage without major symptoms of electrical dysfunction. This damage may be visible, even after a later hard failure, as being symptomatic of the prior presence of the ESD threat.
