EMI generated by RS232 charge pump?

Hi All,



Got an EMC question for you. We use MAX3222E RS232 level shifters using



0.1uF caps, but we are finding that there is a significant amount of RF EMI around 20-30MHz when the drivers are enabled but no cable is attached. It's spread spectrum stuff, not concentrated at any one frequency. My suspicion is the charge pump circuitry. Does anyone have any experience of this? Would increasing the caps to say 1uF from their nominal 0.1uF values help?

No, but if it diminishes materially when a cable is connected I'd suggest it isn't the charge pump. Maybe loading the receivers with a say 22k (or so) to ground would help.

Doubt it. They don't determine the pump frequency.

Well, I didn't like what they were doing to the power supply on some of our boards, so if there was analog circuitry on them we started using a tantalum cap as a bypass instead of the monolithic ceramic. It took out a lot of the noise. Might be worth a quick test.

I had a very similar problem very recently with a design. The power supply line was very noisy due to the MAX3222. I did 2 things which greatly quieted down the problem.

1) Bypass the power pin of the IC with a 10 uF ceramic (size 1206) capacitor. They have very low ESR. 2) Insert a 47 Ohms resistor between the power source (in our case, 3.3 V) and the MAX3222 power pin. The IxR voltage drop was not significant, but the resulting RC filter effectively isolated the power supply rail from the nasty switching noise of the MAX3222. Bypass the other side of the resistor with a 1 uF ceramic capacitor.

And always remember the golden rule:

3) Keep your layout neat and short. Use proper grounding. Improper layout will ruin the best paper-design.

Note that the source (the MAX3222 IC) is still screaming as loudly, but it now has no antenna to radiate its noise (i.e. the power supply line). Note also that this does not address radiation problems from the RS-232 lines, when connected. That is another issue.

How about useing DTR/DSR to switch on or off the power supply to MAX3222E ..? (via some standalone level converter)
