=============================== Simplicity is the keynote.

Begin with a simple 3 to 10 feet whip.

Then advance to a 2 or 3 feet diameter tuned loop for directional purposes.

A multi-turn loop for VLF or a single-turn loop for HF and and VHF.

But to discover the presence of weak interference there's nothing better than a 50 to 150 foot Inverted-L with a very modest ground connection.

It greatly depends on the frequency of interest. Antenna sensitivity for initial ball-park estimation of field strength can be calculated from antenna dimensions with sufficient degrees of accuracy.

Receiver quality matters much more than the antennas used. Use calibrated spectrum analysers for important critical work.
