Read an article yesterday saying that Elon Musk has received $5B in government subsidies. It would be hard for him *not* to be a billionaire.

Sure, it would be nice to repeal the laws of physics.

For my part I'd probably rent a car in the first situation or take a plane in the second. Who wants to drive to Florida from New England? I don't wanna drive my own car down there. The drivers in Massachusetts are bad enough.

Then again I don't buy a daily driver car based on things that I might possibly someday maybe might need, I buy it for my immediate transportation needs. If I find at some point that it won't work for a particular rare situation I'll figure something else out.

I *really* want to see you get a doubling of generation and distribution capacity past the lefy greenies. Don't make us laugh.

So gas powered cars need to remain in production, and we still need gas stations.

Yes, for the moment. In the long run I don't think the ICE-powered vehicle will ever go away completely.

My point was that when making decisions, like what car to buy, or what house to buy, it's easy to mistake minor problems for major issues and vice versa, and end up making an economically unwise call.

I've heard of people walking out of a house they were looking at never to return because one room didn't smell very good. Or this room or that had an ugly paint job or bad flooring or some other trivially-fixable issue in an otherwise perfectly good and priced-to-sell home. Or falling in love with a home that had a major money-sink problem but it had some unique aspect they liked.

It comes up in person too, people will often say "Hey could you drive this car to NYC or Florida or whatever" and I say "Sure, you could, but that's not where it really shines, it shines as an around-town car and I don't take it much further than Boston or Providence" and they make a stinky-face.

I try to use the "5% rule" when making decisions like that, if there's a

5% or less chance of the event I'm concerned about happening, it doesn't factor into my decision-making process. I figure there's less then a 5% chance I'll need to take a long-distance road trip with my daily driving car over the next three years, so I don't worry about a car's performance in that area.

I'm okay with compromising my range-freedom a little bit to absolutely kill it on fuel savings cuz I like money in my bank account. I'm okay with not always being able to get what I want; it's frankly liberating sometimes to not have unlimited choices. Life is not Burger King. You can't always have it your way.

I can't find any info to corroborate what you are saying. The fact that supplemental heat had to be provided may or may not be a result of the power plant efficiency. It could simply be a result of increases in demand.

What waste heat temperatures result from the more efficient power plants?

I think the nuke guys would be too paranoid to permit direct sales of low temperature steam. Might be useful for a factory located near a fossil fuel power plant.

My last and only cross country trip was on a motorcycle. Now I am way too old for that. I can't think of anything that would make me want to drive coast to coast other than if I did it in a Winnebago. Maybe a Winnebago is large enough to make direct nuclear power an option! lol I don't know why anyone would think that was feasible. From what I hear of the time it takes to throttle one up or down stop and go traffic would result in a meltdown!

I seem to recall it was Volkswagon or maybe Ford who was saying they would have a 400 mile range car by 2020. That's only 4 years (3 years after tomorrow) and only 3 (2) years following practical availability of the Tesla model 3 or the Chevy Bolt.

I read where they just started delivering a few Bolts to hand picked customers on the west coast. Only two months late and production is still pretty low. I guess that is to be expected for a new model.

I like the SUV like form of the Bolt, but I think it is going to be too small for me.

I was looking at some hybrid comparisons and they barely mention the Volt. What's up with that? They listed fuel mileage and the various Prius models seem to dominate the top numbers, 44, if I remember. What do you get in yours?

No one uses waste heat for mechanical power. It would be to heat things that need to be heated or preheated. For example, molding processes. It is very common to cool molds with water and to use that hot water to preheat the next mold. Some heat has to be provided and low pressure steam would do the job well I expect.

How long does it take to fill your tank? I know mine takes five minutes. You make two mistakes. You overestimate the problem of charging at a station when needed and you completely overestimate the need for station charging. People will charge at home and at work and at their destinations (mall, movie, supermarket... etc.)

All the kid has to do is plug it in when he gets home. Not much you can do about your kids other than not let them have the car if they aren't responsible.

Simply won't happen. The batteries are too critical to the design of the car. Maybe in another 20 years, when the technology has settled down. But battery replacement to charge is just not needed. It's a solution looking for a problem.

So what do EVs use there? Are you saying your oven is 3-phase? I believe they are 220 volts 50 amps here. Here is the US. Where is there?

I think that batteries being firmly attached to the car and not easily replaced is also a safety issue, keeping a high power high voltage battery safely contained is rather important

I'd assume that most people have an EV has a 3 phase socket installed thoug h you could use a single phase if you have the time

there is 3 phase available where the stove wired in though some only use two one for the oven and one for the rest

Three-phase is exceedingly rare in residences in the US (where "exceedingly rare" == "doesn't happen"). Time _is_ the issue.

Kinda like saying that "keeping gasoline safely contained is rather important". It's the same problem, easily solved with gasoline. Not so much with batteries.

I wouldn't drive to Fl and if Granny breaks a leg I call 911. Are you stupid enough to think the right way to handle it is to get her in your car and drive her to a hospital? I wonder how she would appreciate the pain.

Yup! Just like we still make ICs in DIPs. There's always a need for old technology somewhere. Sounds like you'll be clutching your Audi when you pass away.
