drone question

We did an subsonic/acoustic monitoring system in Mississippi, for the S1B engine tests. The steel Hoffmann boxes where mounted up on telephone poles.

The big reliability problem was the locals shooting at them.

Our system did discover something about alligator mating.

Heavier than that requires formal registration (FAA) in the US. Inexpensive but another issue to address -- esp if you fear Big Brother.

What will your friend LIKELY want to use it for? (assuming this will be his first experience)

Consider:

- just watching it zip around knowing you are at the controls

- aerial "surveillance" (even if not professional; hunting? telephoto?)

- aerial photography/documentation (sporting events?)

- acrobatics (camera may be less important if you want to watch *it*)

- business/commercial/hobbyist

- flight time (consider recharge times; spare batteries?)

- payload (do you want to transport anything) etc.

Is the friend likely to tire of it (you know the type; gets some new toy, energetically engages with it and a month later is never using it)? Or, learn from the experience and "step up" to something more advanced (there's always NEXT year's birthday!)

Make sure the transmitter/receiver (on the drone and the controller) have range appropriate for your application.

Do you want GPS so you can know where the device is at a given time (and/or steer it on a specific course)? Some are smart enough to fly themselves home if they get into trouble (out of radio range); others may default to flying in a large clockwise circle in the hope of reentering radio range. Do you want the drone to *follow* you as you wander around?

Imagine hunting for it *when* it crashes. And, the types of repairs it may likely require. Do you want to replace it if repair costs are a large fraction of purchase price? What if it crashes high in a tree (irretrievable)??

Consider any "flying aids" that he may require. E.g., RC helicopters are delightfully notorious for wanting to flip over for the amateur. When he wants to turn right, will it be "right" from HIS point of of view or from the drone's (airborne camera)?

Are you better off spending the money on something else, entirely?

Temu has more variety than you can shake a stick at, and the price is right. They sell the exact same products other retailers just re-brand and charge a whole lot more for. When, and if, ordering, check it's coming from a "local business", they will tell you this in the ad. Otherwise, you're waiting several weeks for something coming by boat.

A friend and I are happy with products which we bought from Temu. I never buy a drone. Temu can charge extra for distant shipping. Temu does not have a good search engine. (S.
