I just had one of those moments. Looked at a very old design of mine which worked great. Two blocks in there are labeled PGA. They are not programmable gain amps nor do they have anything to do with golfing, they are programmable delay circuits. I have no clue why I named them that way.

From a strictly financial viewpoint, you're probably correct. It's the "value" of preventing human suffering that leads folks like Obama to spend unprecendented sums of money (that we don't have) to try to preclude it; whether or not that's a worthwhile endeavor is highly subjective, certainly.
Well, let's hope so. Personally I kinda think that the standard of living in the U.S. is on the decline, and this was inevitable -- even if McCain and Palin were in office today it'd be happening.
That's how it should work, but it's *employers* who seem to be the ones pushing for various certifications that realistically have little value.
Maybe. Do you want to get rid of publicly-financed elementary and high schools as well?

Ha!! The ONE thing I knew back in those High School guidance counselor sessions.... I sure didn't want to end up being them!
Public elementary and high schools providing the basics is beneficial to the general populace.
However, after I ran for School Board, and saw "education" as the down-and-dirty that it is, I put my sons in private elementary (the girls were already in high school).
Our present education system stinks... lots of crap, bureaucracy and elitism :-(
The girls both went to Scripps College (Claremont).
Both boys opted for U of A... admitting in later life that they purposefully blew the SAT's so they wouldn't have to go to school "where it gets cold" ;-) ...Jim Thompson

Speaking of obsolete, I recently watched a rerun of Columbo where a secretary was explaining the complexities of this new thing (central to the plot) called a "fax machine". Amusing that so much time has passed that the explanation is probably still necessary for young people.

Maybe, but IMO it's boring as hell to be limited to trying to change what can't be. I'm an engineer because I like to design stuff. Risk isn't an issue. You can't make someone's life miserable after you fire them. ;-)
When I was first hired it took me quite a while to "get it" that they wanted *me* to do the new design. The boss sat down and gave me all the information, except that he wanted me to do the project. I was diddling with the simulator, waiting for the other guy to free up, for some time before I figure out that they actually wanted a design. ;-)
I suppose that's not hard to believe.
