I rember, when was a kid, when IBM made an announcement that they had managed to reduce the price of mainframe memory to $50,000 per megabyte.
That would have bought about 40 low-end Fords.

I saw when it was first broadcast. It was the last in a series of very serious "science reports". I think their original intention was to show it on April 1st or at least in April. But that didn't happen, so there was nothing at the time to make it clear to me that it was a joke. I knew enough then to be suspicious of just slotting a decoder PCB into a video tape machine and having it suddenly produce a picture. And the "we have life" bit at the end seemed implausible. But I went to school the following day, still not 100% certain if it was intended to be real or not.
Looking at it now, the bad acting makes it immediately ridiculous.
