There's got to be something about cell phone cameras that explains why I see so many videos that are "mirror images" of reality (as evidenced by "backwards writing").
I can't say I've ever used my phone for anything but a timepiece and a phone so... (no, I take that back; I've checked mail with it)
I've heard that flipping images or videos is an attempt to avoid getting caught for copyright violations.
Mine is a phone, camera, and RPN calculator. No mail, no text, no chat, no voice messages, no news, no games.
I can actually walk around without whacking telephone poles or getting killed by busses.
Phones are doing a huge amount of damage.

That's what email is for. On a PC. With a giant screen and a giant keyboard.
My vision is terrible and I never learned to type on a phone.

It is caused by using the phone in landscape mode and the wrong way up. I have done it myself with an unfamiliar phone.
The correct fixup for video camera used upside down is to rotate the resulting video by 180 degrees, but comparatively few free transcoders offer that option. However, they do usually offer flip horizontal so left becomes right and vice versa.
It is easily done when under time pressure to take a video.
What is "the right way up" when rotated to that aspect ratio? Most phones have an "up" and a "down" that can be deduced from the position of the controls, camera lens, etc. But, how is "rotated right 90 degrees" any different from "rotated left 90"?
(yes, I understand that the image is aligned differently on the video sensor; but, how is the user to detect which way is correct as the app typically adjusts to the phone's orientation)?
[Ah, OK. I opened the camera app on a phone that was nearby and I see the on-screen icons will rotate to be readable as the phone's orientation is changed. But, upside down displays them upside down! (despite the video being right side up). So, rotated left and rotated right produce icons with different orientations!]How do people usually get photos off their phones? I plug into a computer and drag the files across so they are visible as such. Often, the thing I have photographed has no correct "top" or "bottom" (e.g., the lasagna I baked, tonight, could be viewed in any of the four orientations) so, I just dick with it until it best illustrates what I am trying to convey (typically delivered as an email attachment; no "data" plan or SMS on our phones so they only talk to other devices when physically tethered or via WiFi)
Or, if you have no genuine concern for the content beyond that of illustration.

A bit of a movie it is probably done to get around automatic copyright checking bots. But it is rather easy to end up with a mobile phone video that is upside down when using an unfamiliar phone (and in a hurry).
I have a steady hand so I quite often get handed a phone to take a video because the phone owner knows I will do a much better job than they can.
And get hit by cars, bitten by snakes and catch nasty diseases.
They probably shouldn't, but if it is in a closely controlled environment there are fewer physical risks.
