difference between pll and dll??

Hi all,

Can anyone please explain the basic difference between a pll and a dll with some theory ...

Thanks Sj

Hey,

An article on DLL and PLL in the context of pure digital systems:

A biased view from Altera but it does outline the differences between the two:

The basic difference is that a PLL is actually synthesizing a clock (e.g. with some sort of VCO) and phase-aligning it with an incoming clock, whereas a DLL is adjusting the delay on a clock to keep it in phase with another clock (possibly at a multiple or divided frequency).

This document is the top Google hit for "delay-locked-loop"

See page 2 for an answer to your question in the context of FPGA clock distribution.

The difference between a phase-locked loop and a dynamic link library?

Well, one thing that springs to mind is that one is hardware and the other is software...

hehe. Perhaps you could design the DLL as loadable into an FPGA...

Never load a PLL onto your Windows system, as the results will be disturbing. It may even wreck the drive and fill it with small bits of mashed plastic and metal.

On the other hand, never try to multiply your clock frequency, or demodulate FM, or anything like that, with a DLL, as you'll find it difficult to attach the wires.

Thanks for that information, and apologies to the OP for the facetious answer, but I couldn't resist it!

Then there's the FLL as used in MSP430 clock generators....
