I thought I must be losing my mind (Phil need not comment). I'd bought some of these, but when I was starting to fit them, I realise that the ridges are at the end where the pins go in, and thus do nothing to prevent the plug being inserted the wrong way around.

We like these
They're good, but the tool is expensive. They're ok in stable environments but vibration etc is not good for them. Nice and cheap and we soldered wires in when they were used in adverse environments and covered the top with hot melt glue.
Looks like your loading the contacts in the wrong end of the connector.

to me it looks like the ridges fit with slots on the opposite side so multiple connectors can be snapped together
Interesting idea, and I got them out to test this. But the slots and ridges are at opposite ends, so it doesn't work.

It seems a rather obscure application, and odd that my original supplier (Element14 in this case) would sell those, but not the component with the same number of pins that just plugs into a board mounted socket. Perhaps they don't even realise.
