You know, you did this to me, to, and I don't know if it's just disregard, ignorance, or what.

This is a _design_ newsgroup. Most of the people here aren't making stuff for their own entertainment, they're designing _products_. Products, unlike garage-shop hobby projects, need to be made of stuff that's available now, that will be available for the entire life of the product (which may be years), that is of known quality and price, etc.

Crap from ebay has none of those attributes.

If someone is designing a one-off, or for low volume production they'll say so. They'll use such subtle, hard-to-decode phrases like "I'm just going to build one".

No serious manufacturer wants to have his entire production line dependent on crap from ebay thats unreliable in every sense of the word. It would be the height of irresponsibility to hinge a product effort on such a cheesy source. They want to buy from a reputable manufacturer, possibly in more units per month than most ebay sellers see in their entire lifetimes.

He did say medium volume and 50mm x 60mm. To get a specific size, there is no choice but to do a new layout. 2K is the lowest volume to cover a new design. We are getting a 65mm x 35mm Mono for $6. But size does not really matter much.

sure you wouldn't want bet on ebay to supply your production, but in the case of a display that is an spare part to a number of cell phones sold in many many millions it is probably a good place start to looking for a some part numbers so you can find out who makes them

Unfortunately, when you're buying stuff in even moderate quantities (hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands), not getting it from eBay is no guarantee of future availability.

Something that's widely available and being used in lots of crap might be a better gamble than going direct to one manufacturer and seeing what they're prepared to sell you today (because they're probably only making it because some large volume printer maker or cell phone maker is buying it, and when they stop, you're scuppered). I would suggest "generic" QVGA or whatever displays rather than specific cell phone displays, and with minimalist controllers.

I also suggest discussing the issue with the supplier- if you think you can trust their answers (they might just be trying to unload the zillion pieces they got stuck with when their big customer switched suppliers because of price, or, worse, quality issues).

We can map a view port into the actual LCD pixel image. In our case, we only view half of the real image. The top and bottom can be cache for fast scrolling.

Exactly. Cheap displays, refurbished from say Nokia phones is what you use if you are doing hobby stuff, has no place in high volume (or even low) stuff

As the subject listed, this is a custom display, so no off the shelf possibilities. But, a marked scan can list whatever is out there. I did that, but posted here since I cannot scan the entire internet/all shops

I am sure you can find plenty of pictures. But if you ask for samples and/or supply commitment, you will get the same answer. Are you ready to buy 2K pcs?

Yes, and if you check "Assessed Supplier", then the number reduced quickly.

The weed out the suppliers that only trade Western Union style, and the task becomes more resonable :-)
