BNL Job: X-Ray Detector Development (Engineering Focus)

X-Ray Detector Development (Engineering Focus)

As part of a project to develop advanced x-ray detectors for x-ray spectroscopy applications, we are seeking applicants for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in low-noise analog integrated circuit design. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and experience in the development of state-of-the-art CMOS analog circuits. The successful candidate will work closely with experts in this field at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, Long Island. He/She will also work with the scientific end-users of the detector systems to ensure a close match of the development to the need. The position will be for two years. Successful applicants will be considered for staff positions at Brookhaven National Laboratory at the end of the project. Interested parties should send their applications with a detailed description of past experience relevant to the project, three letters of recommendation, a curriculum vitae to snipped-for-privacy@adm.njit.edu.

Key words: x-ray detector, spectroscopy, CMOS, analog circuits

555's are easy. Getting a 556 to work takes a designer's designer.

Ooooo :O The dual version.. Scary... Double the amount of calculus..

Come to think of it... I think a 555 could be used to make an X-ray detector.

Did a 10 second search on x-ray detectors and found:

Xray detector + amp + 555 >>pulse out

Done.... $60 000 please :)

I wasn't aware you needed a PHd to design state of the art electronics. My recollection is Barry Gilbert just had a BSEE. A PHd is good for being an expert witness in court and of course a requirement for academia.

The posting is for a *fellowship* and not a staff position. That is "a financial grant made to a fellow in a college or university." For many of them it is their first, and last, such job before they begin a new career in janitorial engineering....

Would that be a case where 'specializing' kills?

Well they are going to get a grant for their research project, I believe its around $65 million.

The most I've seen there in a while.

That's a nice simplification. But there's more to it.

As with most fellowships, the effect will be to broaden one's scope.

Of course there's more. There's flirting with the receptionist and the all water cooler chat. :)

There's more simple .... Film! Like what my dentist uses.

How about: X-ray detector + DAQ + PC + software = Xray results They need a programmer for the electronics and a physicist for the X-ray detector device.

When I need to broaden my scope, I'll get one with a bigger display. :)

I dream of getting a nice 4 channel colour DSO with a big display or with video out for a LCD monitor.. :P

Those are only the "Non-Scientific" engineering jobs. The *real* jobs are here:

No wonder you can't find employment when you can't pass the simple monkey screen of navigating the HR view of the organization...

Huh? Where do you get this idea? It's just two 555s in one package.

Was it the pinouts that confused you? ;-)

Thanks, Rich

Yes, I know. It was an attempt at some humor. Sorry for the confusion.

I got the joke and knew it was a dual. :)

Don't mind the Mr. Spock type designers.. They only get those jokes when it's time to mate.

The real problem with BNL is the ghastly parking situation.
