On another project I found that there really aren't any true low current zeners in the "jelly-bean part" market. They just spec them in the knee and then call them low current, but those zeners are mushy in that region.

Here we were hard pressed for space. But it seems that many times where I use a chip it doesn't perform as well as ye olde discrete solution :-(

I'll see what we have or can get locally. I don't want to have $$$ of stuff confiscated and thrown into that big barrel.

You would think that UPS or Fedex would have set up booths at airports to handle forwarding for travelers by now.

You just have to plan ahead.

When my wife and I have an extended trip back East we ship our clothes ahead to our hotel by UPS, then likewise ship the dirty clothes back.

It's much cheaper than excess baggage fees, plus you don't have to struggle through airports with lots of baggage.

For the left coast, we just drive... takes less time to drive than fly PHX to ONT.

Dood! I'm impressed! That's an excellent idea!

I just spent about three weeks working on a Chinese Cluster-f*ck, and we got it loaded onto the truck at about 8:00 AM. It's on its way to a trade show, and the client will be leaving in a few days to sign in and supervise the unpacking - meanwhile, there's about 10 pounds of little miscellaneous tools and fasteners and the kind of crap you need at the last minute when you're out in the field, and I asked him about it.

His response was something along the lines of, "Oh, I always ship that crap ahead."

But the idea of UPS and/or FedEx kiosks with live people - better copyright this in a hurry! Get a piece of the action! :-)

Oh, come on! It takes longer to drive to Phoenix than Vegas, doesn't it? Or are you including time wasted at airports? :-) (my point is, geez, how long does it take you to fly from PHX to ONT?)

BTW, speaking of driving cross-country, I've driven between LA and Minneapolis about a half-dozen times, and I still haven't seen the Grand Canyon. I had this impression that it was this great yawning chasm that they had to build huge bridges around, or at least expected to see a sign or two.

But about the Fedex & UPS kiosks with live operators - not everybody plans ahead - look how everybody got taken by surprise at that last panic. :-)

Envision, if you will, a scenario: The security guy says, "Well, you can throw that away, put it in your checked baggage [which, of course at this point, it's too late to do], or go to one of those guys and have it shipped."

Hell, with private enterprise involved, it might even get to the destination before you do! :-)

Concession fees would probably require a huge upfront and by the time you are in the green travelers will have wised up and biz would slowly fizzle.

The guys having a field day are the food stands. They already have the concession and can now ask all the money they want for a bottle of water.

This one is SMF to LAX, too far to drive. Takes eight hours. I wish we had those bullet trains like they have in Europe or Japan. They'd whisk you over in under four hours. And on the way back from a client one can scoot over to the restaurant car and have a brewsky. Sometimes even a real one, not supermarket stuff in a can.

The last time I was on a plane was over 32 years ago. How is that for planning ahead? ;-)

Jim's distance is 335 miles; yours is 385 miles, not that much larger. Driving is mostly on rural roads in both case. Jim, you put me to shame: to me on the old coast (DC area) a trip to NY (mere 250 miles) sounds onerous, although in my defense I have to contend with suburban traffic in DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New Jersey on the way, and pay about $20 in tolls.

I avoid flying myself. Sunday, to Atlanta, will be my first flight since September, 2005.

Try Southwest, SMF to ONT, or to Burbank or maybe even Orange County. (I fly the SMF to ONT route about monthly for my work.)

LAX is kinda busy...

I figure about 375 miles to the actual client... 5.5 hours including a leisurely lunch stop. I10 or CA freeways all of the way, no tolls ;-)

Wouldn't work in my case. You'd get stuck in traffic twice on the route. Hardly anyone makes it in under 8 hours out here (without a speeding ticket, that is...).

SMF has a long-term parking within 2-5 mins walking to the TSA checkpoint :-)

But one can study schematics and stuff, not so easy while driving and avoiding the cell-phone wielding and weaving crowd.

Much better when you have to fly, fix problem, return same night, head to other client next morning.

A cab driver does that for me. But the leg room in those cabs is horrible, scratched a pair of new shoes on that stupid metal barrier last time. Seems they don't even bother to de-burr those :-(
