antenna question (Linx 1/4 wave whip vs 1/4 wave stiff wire)

I'm looking at using a Linx Technologies LR (433Mz) or ES (900MHz) chipset for makeing an RF link with ~500 ft open field range. Linx sells 1/4 wave monopol whip antennas but they are a bit bulky and stout for my purposes. I need something more flexable and flensey.

Could I use something like stiff wire cut the the 1/4 wavelength and achieve similar performance as their whips?

I'm guessing the answer is yes but wanted to bounce it off of you guys.

Works OK here with 1/4 with a different module and mosfet output stage. To do it perfectly would require you to measure SWR somehow.
