Also motor/generator pairs, and ultrasonics (a microphone, a speaker, cemented on either end of a long ceramic rod, can isolate against megavolts).

ISTR a US facility (TV prog)that creating thunder and lightening from storm clouds, on demand. They had a small plastic pipe, a 100m or so with a pressure sensor at the other end. They just blew down the tube to trigger a lightening strike
