On this newsgroup you have to ignore God -- er, I mean Phil. He's so much better than everyone else that before he actually gets a chance to help anyone he gets -- quite understandably -- frustrated with their stupidity and flies off the handle. Then it's just unoriginal profanity and obscure insults for weeks.

What are you trying to do? Just replace the toob and get on with life, or are you trying to redesign the machine with something more modern so you can get parts more easily, at least for the next 20 years?

If it's a matter of just replacing the toob and getting on with life, then you're kinda stuck with digging up the same toob type, or whatever other equivalent toob (it's a thyristor, as Phil said) you can find, and making it work. Using some other toob type means it may not work, or it may have to be modified, etc.

Antique Electronic Supply has them for $60 a pop under "C3JA".

And naturally, any time you go replacing an active device in a circuit you should try to find out why it died before you apply power -- if there's something else wrong with the circuit you'll be out a quick $60, and possibly damage something else, too.

Thanks, Tim. Apparently, Phil is unable to specify a part. I asked him on the off chance that he could, and on the slimmer chance that he might offer a civil answer, but no dice.

Anyway, I want to save the client the cost of a re-design by stuffing in a known replacement, if the tooobs in there are bad, and I was hoping someone had faced the issue before. Your mention of AES is much appreciated. I found 5632's (aka C3J/5632) for ~ $80.00 elswehere, so AES is better.

Thanks John. Tim found Antique Electronic Supply that sells them for $60, and you found them for $50. I found them for ~ $80 Obviously, there's pilot trouble with my searching. :-( But it sure is nice to get the assist you & Tim provided. :-)

Ask on news:rec.antiques.radio+phono The people there have huge collections of oddball tubes they can't use and will sell or trade a lot cheaper than the regular tube dealers.

Richardson Electronics and Penta Laboratories both list the 5632 thyratron. Price on application, 2-3 days availability. I guess they'll be pricey

Be thoughtful, they may need to be replaced in pairs.
