15 kVa UPS, 3 phase, worth $50?

The batteries are probably shot.

That age might be obsolete bipolar Darlingtons rather than IGBT's as I just found out with two much newer and near mint 25 HP Reliance Drives.

But I got the drives for $2.50 each with free shipping. Leaving some wiggle room.

The caps (except possibly for the main bank) and the whatnots are not worth pissing over. We give them to another eBay seller who pays us $200 per month to haul all of our trash away.

Some of the older UPS are capacitor storage only and are really a power quality conditioner that only can coast through a few cycles. We did sell a large one of these a few years back, but it was not worth the hassles and the uncertainty.

The thing about three phase VFC motor drives is you can buy a brand new unit for much less than the shipping on an older one.

Also an IGBT sixpack module of 100 amps 1500 volts is worth about $30 in large quantities these days.

Well, 3 phase isn't exactly common and usually are used in industrial. Homes and most commercial are wired for single phase only. If it works, it may be worthwhile to a small industrial that has a tight budget.

Have you tried searching the completed auctions on eBay for 3 phase UPS? See if they are worth $50 or so?

Someone is offering me a 15 kVa UPS for $50, made around 1994. It is 3 phase. I have no need for such a UPS, as such, however based on my past experience I know that there is plenty of expensive power electronics, IGBTs, etc. Also copper, connectors, caps, receptacles, contactors, snubbers and whatnot.

I demolished a few big UPSes before and it was very satisfying.

So... Is there something interesting in 15 kVa units that would not be in 5-8 kVa units? Worth the $50 purchase price? I suppose that there should be at least 6 big IGBTs, 100,000 uF caps, and what I mentioned above.

Forgot to say, there are no batteries. (which I like a lot)

I will sell this thing by components only.

Congrats Don, you are da man!

I got some 600A circuit breakers for $6 apiece recently.

I may check a little bit about what is inside before committing. The previous big ass upses were a goldmine.

I calculated, it ought to be more like 400 amps apiece, 6 pieces (6 half bridges)

5 kVa UPSes that I demolished last spring, had 150A IGBTs. Is this one more like the kind that produces 3 5 kVa phases, or the kind that makes three 15 kVa outputs (3 phase). Depends on their safety factors. i

If they are trying to offer you $50 to take it away they are insulting your intelligence. Depending on the size of the UPS our prices start at $1,200 for the removal and *proper* disposal of the unit and all it's components. Of course, this means they must have the UPS disconnected and ready for transport, preferably sitting on their loading dock.

The only three phase UPS you can make a few bucks on eBay with is a newer model APC unit. The problem with three phase UPS units is they are generally site specific and most will never accept a used unit. NEVER pay for UPS units! And always surcharge an extra $400 for them f****ng Lieberts. Unless you have local customers that want these it's not worth screwing with.

Yes, I think that $50 may be too much. In any case, as I said, it would be for scrap.

Man, if I had 50 bucks, I'd snap that puppy up! At that price, though, I'd be a little leery of the condition of the batteries. Hell, even if you get your jollies demolishing stuff, it'd be worth it, albeit foolish. Snag it, and put it on ebay, and you'll probably get $300-$400 for it.

Or you could use it to power that fantasy welder. ;-)

Good Luck! Rich

Like I said earlier, if I was to buy this unit, it would be for the purpose of taking it apart and salvaging parts.

Batteries are not included, and I love that fact.

I hope that you mean $300-400 in parts, because these UPSes do NOT sell well on ebay.

Actually, I already have a welder, got it for $9.99...
