1" cubes

I seem to have a recurring need for 1" cubes to use as small equipment cases. Things like a little basic circuitry in a lead, and various other very small & simple apps.



What do you use for jobs like this?

Tin plated steel sheet. 0.2mm and 0.3mm thick, (RS Components about £17 for a big pack). Cuts with scissors. Can be folded up with pliers and fingers and is magic to solder up the edges. The stuff is dead easy to punch, say

10mm holes for BNC or 6mm for switches and LEDs, using something homemade, or the £9 Chinese punch set that came off Ebay. Stays bright and shiny for a long time and makes a really good earth. A truly spirited follower of the art, can print out a CAD drawn surface development, Prittstik it onto the tinplate and scissor and punch as required. No measuring needed.

Same here. But who uses film now-a-days?

But I like the steel sheet idea. If you buy thicker sheets, it would be even more stable and you can saw it for simple forms like a cube:

Now-a-days I prefer plastic "project boxes"... much more professional looking.

Yep - and fill it with hot glue or RTV if more cable or component strain relief is needed.

As for film cans, I remember re-using the little tubes that the Poloroid schmear came in. ...but (as with JT's plastic boxes notion) no shielding. 8-(

Can't beat a bit of steel for screening those wild waves :)

If you don't need shielding you can pick up some ice cube trays at a dollar store and cut them apart.

I like that idea, pot them wth epoxy - and also the tin plate method, which I've played with before but never really got into. Thanks everyone

To the person that asked, it doesnt much matter what the material is, it just needs to contain a little circuitry.

I tend to shy away from potting generally, as its non repairable, but it sounds like a good idea really. I suppose one could even put sand in the epoxy to extend it, but hardly worthwhile at =A31 per 40ml.

Where the contents are small enough I might just try potting with a 1" plastic ball - the result would be easier to drag around behind furniture.

You might want to coat the board with a layer of RTV (the kind that doesn't use acetic acid) before the epoxy. The RTV is compliant enough to relieve the stress caused by curing and thermal expansion of the epoxy.

This sounds expensive. At eBay you can buy it at £1 per 130ml:

And looks like using some silica sand as an extender is stable up to a ratio of 4 parts sand and 1 part epoxy:

The average density of epoxy is 1.5g/cm^3. This means you'll need about 25g of epoxy for a 1" cube. If you use 4 parts sand as an extender, you'll need

6g epoxy per cube, which means you can build 32 cubes for £1. And should be simple to produce: mixing some epoxy, hardener and sand, and filling it in a cubic mold with your equipment.

This question is not clear. One can use copper sheet instead of tin-plated steel, in fact it's even easier to work with than timplate. But, "stuck to [the] sheet"? What sheet?

And the next one:

Do you mean backing? Where did the glass come from?

Again, this question isn't clear. You could use a plastic box and cover it with self-adhesive copper for EMI shielding, but this seems to not answer your question either?

Can you give us a clearer picture of what you're actually trying to accomplish?
