I'm looking at a circuit based on an NE570 compandor chip (as described in

A couple questions arise:


  1. What are the key differences between the NE570, NE571, and SA571? They don't seem to just be different manufacturers' numbers, as for instance I see all three referred to (but not distinguished) in a Philips datasheet.


  1. Is the NE570 still available (in small quantities)? I didn't find any variants at Mouser, Digikey; found only the NE571 at Jameco.

  2. Is there some newer chip that is a pin-compatible improved replacement? (E.g., lower noise, better bandwidth, improved linearity...)

A friendly soul scanned some pages for me from the '77 Signetics databook. Based on that and some other exploration:

The difference between SA and NE is, indeed, just a temp range thing. NE is consumer (0C to 70C); SA is -44C to 85C.

The difference between 570 and 571 is that 570 has generally tighter specs than 571, and can take 24V supply rather than the 571's 18V max supply.

The OnSemi SA571 datasheet shows 5V/us slew rate; the Signetics datasheets show 0.5V/us for all parts. All other specs are identical so I suspect the OnSemi datasheet is simply a typo, rather than a vastly-improved part.
