OT: Griddle Latch

Today I made the mistake of googling "shaper" (the reciprocating metalworking tool) to show a colleague what they look like.. apparently there is more than one kind.

Remember those U-shaped spring wire clamps use to hold down the Siemens Relays in Telco products. Find such a relay clamp and drill two small 2mm X 5mm deep holes in the edge of the top cast. Cut the spring clamp to size and bend two small hooks to fit into the holes. With a hacksaw cut two small slots running through the holes to lock the clamp in the upright position while cooking.

Annealing might be required before bending the hooks. Holding the spring wire tips in the gas lighter flame will do the trick. (Piano wire might also do if the scrap box does not produce relay clamps. The high notes often have four strings per note - one missing string might not be noticed :-). By the way - only the grand children exercise those notes - pianist don't. Next time the piano tuner comes around s/he will replace the missing string.

For storage - hook the spring clamp over the lip in the bottom cast.

Oh ? You mean something like a Reciprocating Dingle arm being held on by a girdle spring?

Just don't make the mistake I made by walking into Nordstroms when they were advertising a foundation sale and ordering a truckload of ready-mix.
