Palsonic DVD player

Hi all,

invested $44 on a Palsonic DVD2040 from DSE this arvo.

Just needed a compact CD player for my workshop - as a music signal source and for my Denon " Audio Technical CD " with its white and pink noise plus

1/3 octave noise tests signals ( 99 tracks in all).

Though the Palsonic works surprisingly well ( even has a volume function on the remote) there is a niggling problem.

The darn thing has a background hum on the L & R audio outputs, the fundamental frequency of which is very steady at 194 Hz - plus some higher harmonics. This must somehow be related to the audio sampling frequency of

194kHz.

The hum level is about 1.4mV rms or 62dB below max level, it stops completely in "pause" mode but the volume function has zero effect on the level.

Anyone concur ?

This was covered in some detail in Oct 2007 Silicon Chip mag with tests of several similar consumer DVD/CD players currently on the market (though not the "Palsonic" model).

They believed that this was mostly due to the crappy switchmode power supplies used in the players radiating noise, and they tried making up a linear PSU to replace the SM one which fixed the hum problem, but obviously not the poor audio quality.

Ironically, building such a replacement PSU would probably cost almost as much in parts as the entire player retailed for however.

The whole SC article was a pile of bollocks.

If (and that is a very BIG if ) you hear residual 50 Hz derived noise from a DVD player using a SMPS - all you need do to ELIMINATE IT is run the unit from a 240:240 volt isolation transformer.

The cause is the damn Y cap.

Funny how SC never said that.

Please note: the noise in my Palsonic is NOT linked to the mains frequency.

if its the psu like kreed mentioned. put an aluminium foil sheild around the psu and filter capacitors on the V+ feeds, there should only be 3 voltages in the psu, 3v 5v and 12v. easy to tap these out of an old AT psu if simple filtering/sheilding doesn't help
