I liked this sentence, and particularly the bit about a New Age expert.

That's like the alchemists in the middle ages. Their 'recipes' for transmuting things into gold were always extremely complex, distill 50 times, decant with eye of frog 100 times, etc, etc. So when it failed, they could always point to some error made on the way through the procedure.
