"Chisel" tip from Altronics is actually round?

Hi,

I own a soldering iron from Altronics (T2442) and I received a round tip with it.

However I've read that chisel tips can be easier to work with, so I went to the website and found a suitable "chisel" tip (T2434) at

The picture on their website sure does look like a chisel tip, but when I received it today, I swear it's just a round tip, here are some pictures I took of it:

Is this a round tip, or do small chisel tips just end up looking round? Trying not to get annoyed with Altronics..

Thanks for any advice,

Regards,

Ross..

I wouldn't call it chisel, it looks round to me. On the other hand for small tips it doesn't make too much difference for me. For working with larger components (and larger tips) chisel does transfer more heat quicker but for fine work I wouldn't care too much.

That trip is most certainly a classic round tip. Not chisel, not micro chisel, not even close.

The Altronics photo is hard to tell, but it looks like it could be a

0.8mm chisel as described. The 0.8mm is supposed to be the measurement of the chisel flat face width at the very tip.

You've been diddled I'm afraid.

Are you near a store were you can actually go have a scratch'n'sniff before buying?

Thanks for the confirmation, I thought as much..

Closest store is Auburn (probably a half hour trip from me). But since I'd need to borrow my parent's car and didn't have much time, I assumed I could trust them based on the explicit description and image of the tip. In the end it looks like I'll have to visit them after all (to try and get a refund)..

Hmmm... looks more like a round tip to me.

Looks like a round tip to me. Same as on the Altronics website. I would not have described it as a chisel point though. For small component work (say SMD) the tip you got should be quite satisfactory.

For regular low mass general PCB work the bigger 1.6mm chisel face would possibly be a better choice.

This is more what I would describe as a classic chisel point tip.

Keep the small 0.8mm round point. You will find a use for it.

Thanks for all the tips (no pun intended) and advice gents. I appreciate that there are people that are willing to share some of their knowledge and experience.

For the serial flamer, welcome to my newsgroup kill list.
