PCB Costs

Does anyone know how much cheaper surface mount designs are to build than thru-hole ones? What about mixed boards? I have a design with ~200 parts that I am considering having built. Would it be cheaper to use all thru-hole components, or about 50 thru-hole and the rest surface mount?

If you are interested, I make d/s plated thru boards, good for your s/m and thru-hole project. I charge $0.75/sq" for d/s pth boards and $0.50/sq" for s/s boards. There is a small film charge but the film is yours when I'm finished with it or I can keep it in case you want to make more of the same. If you want a price quote, send me gerber photoplots, make sure pads are not covered with ground plane as I hand drill using an Excellon drill and need to see them. snipped-for-privacy@direct.ca Boards are FR4 with bright tin/lead finish and have 1oz copper.

There is no simple answer - a lot depends on things like the type of components and production volume. There are also often significant differences (both ways) in cost between through-hole and SM components.
