Hardware video encoding

I understand that hardware-accelerated video encoding is possible on the Pi, and so I presume that it should be able to encode SD video in real time from a USB video capture device. I bought a capture device from a



Raspbian repository) displayed the captured video on-screen just fine. So a suitable driver is already present. So far so good.



A web-search suggests that getting hardware-accelerated H.264 encoding working is a major adventure, with complex articles like this:

But the articles all predate Raspbian Jessie. Does anybody know if the latest Raspbian has hardware video encoding ready-built in some utility?
