SSH works over a network connection, not a serial line.

I believe Windows Putty has provision for serial connections.

You should be able to attach multiple serial ports via USB. Not sure if there are adapters for parallel ports.

Plus of course SIMH has provisions for faking these connections virtually.

How does it know about ARM chips?

It seems I load the OS into a micro-SD (TF) card.

The SIMH packages are a standard part of Debian, compiled for all the architectures it supports. They will be available in your ARM Debian (Raspberry Pi OS, is it officially called?).

You should find ready-bootable images, and instructions, at the Raspberry Pi site.

Yup. Linux distros typically come with thousands of packages ready to install from their standard repos. And Debian (which Raspberry Pi OS is an offshoot of) is one of the more well-supplied ones.

Integrated package management on Linux distros takes care of automatically bringing in any necessary dependencies, as well. And you can keep everything up-to-date with the latest available versions with just one or two commands.

One snag is I download from the library, no broadband at home (using plain text unix dialup right now).

Short of taking RasPi with me to library, how can I download the components (and most Unix stuff has dependencies..)
