When USB PD charger brakes?

Sep 14, 2026 0 Replies

I bought a USB-C 65W charger - max PD with only one port in use - for a max

45W load. But I had to connect a cable with USB trigger negotiating fixed
20V 5A power delivery option. Because of MagSafe 1 port on the other end.

Battery charging surprisingly worked. I monitored P/V profile through the appropriate laptop framework and it was the same as with the original charger.

Something didn’t look right though. Mouse pointer jittery. Metal laptop case slightly charged. I was acting as ground with the other hand.

I must say used for years and years the original charger with a wall plug - without - ground pin. Meant for Class 2 low power appliances I am sure. Still without noticing any problem.

Then the new, slim USB-C charger broke. Felt a “pop” sound. Both USB -C and

-A ports not working.

Faulty charger? Wrong charging cable? Lack of grounding finally caught up with me?
