FreeBMD.org.uk shows 30479 births with that surname in England & Wales since (civil) records began (i. e. mid-1837), so yes - not that common.

Not all the great contributors had units named after them. Oliver Heavyside springs to mind in this regard.
Though he had a layer named after him - what we now know as the ionosphere (with several layers, that come and go - but it was thought to be one layer at one time).
He looks a bit like my Applied Math prof. And just as unconventional.
