Still not sure what to. One more quesiton about PC to TV.

I'm trying to output streaming tv to my DVDR/TV set up 100 feet away.

I might well have misunderstood, but earlier both Peter D sort of gave me the impression that I could manage do this with good quality 100 foot co-ax for the sound and S-video for the picture.

I'm only working part-time and I'm trying to save money, if the method above is likely to work. (After all, watching more tv isn't a necessity.)

OTOH, method B below is only about 145 dollars, but I'm not sure "only" is the right word. That will be quite a bit more than using 3 moderately good quality cables.

Please tell me what is the better choice for me. Thanks a lot, and I'm sorry for being a pain.

B. You both said a better way would be to use transformers at each end, and Fin gave a wholesale source and then said "A less expensive and more readily available alternative is available from svideo.com. I haven't used this product but it probably works as well as the one I use.

  1. Check eBay for the baluns (transformers) to convert unbalanced to balanced signals. They are cheap there (buy a couple of spares incase one is bad).
  2. Cat 5 (or Cat 5e) cable would work just fine. No need for the more expensive Cat 6 stuff.
  3. I bought a spool of 1500 ft of teflon coax surplus for about last year. If there are surplus electronics companies near you, check them. Also check on eBay just in case someone has some listed there.
  4. Assuming nothing else is needed you should be able to do this with Cat 5 for under . Remember Cat 5 has four pairs, you need 2 for Svideo, and two for audio if doing stereo.

Use Fiber Optics. All you need is a coupler for the video and the lightpipe output on the DTV box side and another on the other end.

The baluns I use I believe are no longer manufactured. The link I posted was just to show you what I what I was using and not as a source to buy. That's why I also posted the second link to a current product. I bought my baluns used from an online dealer at a very reasonable price. PeterD's suggestion to check eBay is a good one. You may get lucky.

I bought my 100-foot Cat5e cable from Monoprice. They charge $8.90 + shipping. Shipping to the east coast, where I live, is $6.97. It's less if you live closer to California.

Thank you all. I don't know why I don't think of Ebay as often as I should. It's not like I don't shop there. I bought a surplus car alarm there just last week, a model they didn't sell anymore becuase it had been slightly upgraded by the manufacturer, but I still didn't think of it here.
