I have a Compaq branded Quantum DLT 7000 drive that is somewhat problematic.
Sometimes it doesn't seem to unload/rewind the tape properly, but starts blinking all right leds.

Ugh... Could be darn near anything from a thermal intermittent to dirty switch contacts.
Quantum probably has flat-rate repair for those drives. You may want to look into that.
