GE Microwave popping and crackling

I had recently found a GE microwave by the side of the road. It is in a very nice looking' condition, date Jan.2002 1 year warranty model #JES831PWF001. My second thought was this unit is to nice looking to not have a trouble. Well, I was right, when I plugged it in the first thing I noticed was that it had to initialize its smart board, ok fine. Then a message came across the digital display quoting the word "RESET"(Later I find out what this word means). So, now I'm setting the clock and everything seems OK at this point. Now here is the fun part of my post. I go to punch in some numbers, you know to run the unit and see how it works. The very first number I punch in is the 1 pad and the thing starts up, runs automatically. I don't get to pad in any other pads, but then after a few seconds of running it starts popping, crackling and voltage-current drain through out the house. I quickly unplug the unit. (In the inside -cooking area- of the unit is a smart chard area about a half inch in diameter around 2 by 4 at the top of the metal plate).

A magnetron is the vacuum tube which generates the microwave energy. 2.4 GHz would certainly interfere if it were not contained but microwaves are usually shielded well enough that this isn't a problem. All consumer microwave ovens run at this frequency.

The paint inside the cavity has been damaged and it's now arcing just as it would if you stuck a fork in there. Sometimes this can be repaired if you clean it very well, sand off any oxidation and then touch it up with microwave oven cavity paint. You'd want to check the condition of the waveguide though to make sure it isn't damaged. Microwaves ovens are simple, but they can also be deadly to work on, please read the repair FAQ before poking around in there.

Mr. Sweet Thank you for your positive input on my original post. I'm a beginning repair technician and any help in clarifying my misunderstanding is appreciated.(Mr. Sweet) (others) I have a CET and just because I don't know all the jargon as of yet does not mean I don't have feelings. For the one who stated "troll" a simple saying to me like "to much side talk just the problem would be fine" : this would had been more professional don't you think!

I do already read through the repair FAQ's and quit frequently I should state. It is very well in-depth. It is also a start home page on one of my many computers.

(question to anyone) For this troll thing is this just a polite way of saying "screw off, your not part of the click so we're not going to help you with your legit problem" I look forward to coming to this news group reading a lot, I mean a lot of these post. I am very offended by their "troll" statement so whats up with that?

Take no notice Mike. These are the morons we normally call cyber bullies - they speak and behave in a manner that they don't normally do offline (and thank christ for that!).

As someone else stated, microwaves can be a rather dangerous thing to work on. Your best bet if you really want one would be to get one new. If you just wanna tinker with it, by all means, but exercise some caution.

I'm not a cyber bully, and I speak and behave virtually the same manner (no pun intended) online and offline. Google on my posts if you doubt that.

I seriously thought the OP was a troll. After all, who would ask in a sci.* newsgroup "I have several questions, but here is the first one what is a magnetron? Stupid question I know! There is RF frequency statement by the model # that says RF 2450MHz; will this frequency interfere with my 2.4GHz wireless router?"

A few minutes with Google would answer both these questions without wasting the newsgroup's bandwidth.

Yep, understood, and certainly valid points in your post. All I'm saying is that we should give 'em a go every once in a while, instead of an NG full of people ready to pounce on someone who, granted, probably *should* have checked Google prior to posting.

Eheh, this is a ROTFL question ! If the microwave goes on 2.45Ghz and the router goes on 2.4Ghz it's obvioua that a non-shielded owen makes interference. But because *all* the owens are shielded, there isn't any problem !

Ok, that statement had me gut rolling on the floor. I'm even having a hard time typing.

First off, if all I had to do was google it then why would there be such a need for a newsgroup of this nature? Second, in my OP I also stated that I was a beginning repair tech(lookin' for supportive help). Third, also in my OP I gave some hopefully useful information on what the "RESET" meant. OK I'm done with this numbering thing, it's getting boring. As for the CET it has been a while since I took that test, but I don't be or recall a question on magnetron. Anyways, you all I didn't mean to bother anyone. I really have a hard time some times. I get frustrated, angry, let down( by myself)all because I want to understand everything and there is so much information to electronics and the industry. I originally went to school for my A+ , but this other stuff was part of it CET, FCC lic, Diploma. Any more posting would be a waste of BW, right Mike L.
