I was helping my wife install a higher capacity hard drive in her old Compaq Presario today. Having poor lightiing (and eyesight!) I did not notice that I had installed the ribbon cable such that all the odd pins from motherboard end were connected to the even pins on the drive and nothing was connected to the odd pins on the drive or to the even pins on the MOBO. This I didn't notice for about 30 minutes of attempted troubleshooting. The drive was slightly warm, which I attribute to the motor being energized as the odd and even pins of +5 volts are directly across from each other. According to the pinouts numerous signal pins would have been crosswired and a few would possible have been forced to ground. The HD light on the laptop was flashing this whole time and the CD door would not open itself for some reason.
After correcting this, it seems the Win 98 install is going OK.
Anyone done this before? Any reason for concern about damage to the HD or MOBO?
Thanks In Advance
