Any explanation for why there is sometimes a crackling noise when you first turn a television on?

  1. If you hear a 'boom' at the power up state, it's probably a VDR (Voltage Dependent Resistor) normalize the magnetic field in the CRT. (The cable that goes around the tube).

  1. The cracling noises are static discharges. Absolutely normal at power up. If you then turn it off and back on, there will be less cracling noise.

Hope this opens up a new world for you :)

It's the degaussing coils causing a vibration at line frequency. The thermistor in the degaussing circuit (not VDR) makes no noise.
