Adding subwoofer to desktop ACS340

Hi Guys,

I would like to add a small subwoofer to my desktop PC speakers. The speakers are pretty good on their own, but extra base would be nice.

Came by an Altec Lansing ACS340 subwoofer, which was part of a 3-speaker set. All the controls were in the small L&R speakers. Don't really want to reproduce the tone controls.

Been looking for a schematic for the ACS340, but nowhere to be found. Would like to adapt it as independent sub with my present speakers. Any ideas?

Regards,

Take a signal from them, filter out the higher frequencies, and amplify it to suitable for the subW.

Well, the line input is in the subW, from which it normally goes to the L&R speakers. The amp is really in the subW, only the controls are normally in the L&R speakers (well one of them).

With a schematic, I might be able to do some surgery :-)

Hmm.. you probably mean that signal is normally fed there from L&R spkrs?

Then, I think that u just need to feed line signal to the input :-) I don't think that you really need any other controls than volume in the subw, since it plays only sub-low-range.

The master volume control is on the right speaker, along with the power switch (on the back), a LED power indicator and the bass and treble controls. The left speaker is just that, a speaker.

I have the two small ACS340 speakers, but not the subwoofer if the OP needs them.

I have two other Altec Lansing subwoofer models, but I don't know if the small ACS340 speakers can be used with the ACS 295 or ACS 250 sub woofers.

I'd guess these are similar to my ASC 45's and my ACS 45.1's with the input on the sub and the volume control on the sattelite speakers, but yours having an analog control instead of digital (knob instead of push buttons)... I'm not sure how the handled that but the 45's and the 45.1's have a simple pinout only using 5 wires. It is a type of din connector that looks simiar to a ps-2 mouse or keyboard connector.

If your connector is a 5 pin connector I believe this should be the proper wiring for it. ~~| |~~

Hi Mike,

Thanks for posting the pinouts for the 45's. The ACS340 has a 9-pin connector. Functions include on-off, vol, base, trbl, LED.

I was able to find the schematic of the power amp chip, but not for the whole system. Altec Lansing does not provide it.

Having a pintout for ACS340, such as you have given would allow me to "hardwire" the bas/trbl to a fixed value add a switch for power (maybe pot for vol)
