Well a design with 10% fewer packages, 1% lower manufacturing cost, and twice the sales is a better deal for the involved parties. Application engineers did a lot of that also.

Just the same 5 inputs and 4 outputs is subgrade even for the venerable
22V10. Interacting state machines can also make tractable things that are otherwise not so (like PCI bus).-- JosephKK
Perhaps, but there is little relationship between number_of(packages) or Cost(Manufacturing) and number_of(sales). Cost price.

It used to be the case that in some countries the labor cost of hand assembliing a board of TPH devices was less than the cost of running an SMD machine. Not sure if that's still true anymore.
