(Episode VI) The return of BAUMULLER

We have a Man-Roland press system with Baumuller virtual axis drive.



The press machine has been provided with : - BUM 62-75/130 : mono power unit (+ BUS 6E) - controlled by DSP-MAR : DSP multiple axis controller - supervised by DSP-SDC : Sync drive controller ...



and we have an E**N**O**R**M**O**U**S P**R**O**B**L**E**M !!!



One by one, the output power stage of the BUM explodes !!



All the times, the machine is not running or is stopping !! Even on a printing group stopped for a long time (several hours) !!



All the external braking resistors are correctly connected.



We want know if other compagnies have the same problem.

Check your AC line power quility, check all the phases, etc. Do a failure postmortem.

The AC line power quality seems to be good (inside Baumüller specifications). We have overvoltage protection on all the phases (good enough for the drive). We have lots of inverter on the line and any of them complain.

The output transistors seem to be well sized for the application and can endure more power than they take.

We think the problem comes from premature wear of electronic components ...

Since electronic components don't have any moving parts, that's a concept we don't often see. What we do see is overstressed parts, which can generally be traced to specific causes. But first it's necessary to do a failure analysis: Exactly what failed, and if multiple items, what failed first causing the other items to fail? Keep in mind the designer and manufacturer will have already made sure that no part is ever overstressed during normal operation.

One failure mode not covered is defective parts. But if this is your problem, the company will no doubt have already seen multiple failure instances, so give them a call.

better check your control transformer wiring,. it sounds to me that you do not have it wired for the proper voltage.

Seriously, only output transistors failed (the big black box near the metal thingumajig called dissipator).

Of course the manufacturer knows the problem, and only repairs our drive and receives (a lot of) money in exchange ...

Only the oldest drives failed, not those that have been repaired.

We DO NOT WANT a solution to our problem, we just want to know if others compagnies have the same problem.

What do you mean by transformer ? What's that ? Voltage ? Too many wires enter into the drive (some green, some blue, some black).
