I am assuming that you refer to an LED backlit, alphanumeric LCD display module. This being the case, remember that the LED module still requires to be current limited, even though it says something in the datasheet that it's supply is 5v at approximately 200mA. Put a 1 watt 27 Ohm resistor in series with the +5v supply line for maximum current draw/brightness. Personally I use a 47 Ohm resistor and find the display more than useable at this level of brightness. If of course, you are not using such a module, check to be sure, that the LED module is indeed current limited.
