ADC MCP3304 howto increase input voltage up to 20V (default 5V)

Hi everyone,

I'm using an ADC Microchip MCP 3304c, this converter has max input analog voltage = 5V, but i must measure voltage up to 20V. Tested circuits are car electronics fuel iniection components. I'm software developer so i don't understand electronics science so good. Please help me how to connect ADC and tested circuit. Max sample rate will be 600 count per second on one port. MCP 3304C specification(PDF) is here:

Thanks, (sorry for my poor english) Gregory

you need a couple of resistors as a voltage divider.

R1 in from the 20 Volt source to the ADC input could be 750 ohms, R2 from the ADC input to common/ground could be 250 ohm.

as you can see this is a .25 ratio.

what this does is simply scale your input so that it won't over drive the ADC. you will have to perform the math in the software to reflect

20 Volts. 13 bit ADC gives you 8192 steps., but i did notice that the input voltage only goes down to 2.7 up to 5.5 , not sure if this range is going to give you the full 13 bit scale ? you may need to offset the input to 2.7 volts.
