USB drives for embedded file systems

Hi, I've put this query to the supplier of the embedded systems that I use:

interested in whether this is a live topic in the wider community.

Given the valid concerns about write tolerance, wondering whether there's any consideration of using USB hard drives (real rotating ones) in place of flash file systems on memory sticks for embedded Linux. I can see reasons why it could be a no-go, but if it could be made to work work it'd be a goodie.
