This part specifies 0.85Vcc as the "recommended" minimum logic input level and 4.5V to 5.5V as the "recommended" Vcc level. But then this apnote alludes to Vcc working down to 3V..

TI seems to be pretty liberal when it comes to supply voltages. :)
There is an application note available at TI website that shows MSP430F1xx powered from 5V controlling the Triac. The datasheets says that 3.6 V is the maximum allowed voltage for that chip ;)
