Three PhD positions in self-adaptive systems at Linnaeus University (Sweden)

Three PhD positions in software engineering of self-adaptive systems at Lin naeus University Sweden [Apologies if you receive multiple postings of this announcement.]

The AdaptWise research group that is based at the Computer Science Departme nt of Linnaeus University, Växjö Campus invites applications for three fully funded PhD positions starting Spring 2014.

DESCRIPTION OF POSITIONS

----------------------------------------

  1. Assurances for decentralized self-adaptive systems The goal of the research is to study and develop a formally founded approac h to provide assurances for decentralized self-adaptive systems. The approa ch will combine formal methods with principles from control theory and lear ning. The research results will be validated in the domain is smart homes. The PhD student will be supervised by Danny Weyns.

  1. Self-adaptive parallel computing systems The goal of the research is to study and develop a novel holistic approach for self-adaptive parallel computing systems that will address self-adaptiv eness at software and system architecture level. The research results will be validated for a heterogeneous parallel computing system. The PhD student will be supervised by Sabri Pllana.

  2. Strategic reuse in engineering self-adaptive software systems The goal of the research is to develop methods and techniques to propel str ategic reuse in engineering processes for self-adaptive software systems. T he application domain is primarily embedded systems and research results wi ll be validated in close collaboration with industry. The PhD student will be supervised by Jesper Andersson.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

------------------------------------ The research will be carried out in the AdaptWise research group. The focus of the group is on engineering software systems that have to deal with unc ertain operating conditions, such as dynamic availability of resources, fau lts that are difficult to predict, and changing user needs. To deal with su ch uncertainties, AdaptWise studies self-adaptation that is realized by mea ns of a feedback loop that enables a system to adapt autonomously when oper ating conditions change. The particular focus is on decentralized systems, where adaptation is realized by multiple feedback loops. Concrete aspects w e are interesting in are formalisms and design models to realize self-adapt ation for different quality goals and how the models can be exploited at ru ntime to provide evidence for the required goals. We study the interplay of self-adaptation at different layers of the technology stack and investigat e methods and techniques for strategic reuse in engineering processes for s elf-adaptive software systems.

REQUIREMENTS

----------------------- Candidates should have a Master degree or equivalent in Computer Science or in a closely related subject. A successful candidate has excellent analyti cal skills, is a committed researchers with a drive for excellence. Very go od skills to express her/himself scientifically in written and spoken Engli sh are a prerequisite. Besides basic knowledge in self-adaptive systems, pr ior research experience or the ability to readily get knowledgeable in one or more of the following topics is a significant plus:

- For position 1. Assurances for decentralized self-adaptive systems: forma l methods, control theory, machine learning, and empirical methods

- For position 2. Self-adaptive parallel computing systems: parallel comput ing, machine learning

- For position 3. 3. Strategic reuse in engineering self-adaptive software systems.
