Terminal emulators

I have been working on a program which will use a terminal emulator asthe user interface. One thing I am finding is that there seem to bedifferent command formats in the different emulators. I tried usingthe telnet program that came with Windows. Then I tried Putty. Thecharacters sent from keypresses seem to be different for the variousfunction keys. For example, under telnet, the DEL key is the singlecode 127 while the Putty program sends a sequence of ESC [ 3 ~ Thefunction keys F1 to F4 are sent as similar sequences in Putty when in"ESC[n~" mode and sends VT52 sequences (e.g. ESC O P) in VT100 mode.The telnet program only seems to send the VT52 sequences. Neitherprogram sends the VT100/52 sequence for the cursor control keys(arrows).I can't find documentation on the ESC[n~ sequences anywhere. It seemsthat there is overlap in that a command can be ESC[n~ or ESC[nm~. Sothe ~ serves as a command terminator which makes the command a bitharder to parse.I can make the program work with any of these formats, but I wouldlike to understand where they come from and to make sure that I amusing them correctly by finding the appropriate documentation. Arethe "ANSI" keyboard sequences documented anywhere? I can find docs onthe commands *sent* to ANSI terminals, but I only find info on VT52,VT100 etc keyboards. Even if I try to use the VT100 formats, they arenot uniformly supported.Rick

Input can be quite simple, if you make the uC under Test a SPI-master. Needs little code only and can handle Rx and Tx reliably.

As "industry standard PCs" are becoming expensive arcade games with lots of Giga-something, that can run crashbangflashIII with 500fps, but do not have any useful interfaces any longer, any uC with SPI and UART plus a RS232/USB converter can do this tough SPI-job for you ;-)

Very interesting. Although it's only a low-speed link, it could be useful as a debugging interface. Still, I'm glad my 8KB, 8MHz MSP430 system has a UART!
