When I worked for Racal, my boss once mentioned that his best software people had a hardware background.

Working the show itself is a PITA. However, I did get to go to some good Apple and Microsoft parties after NCCs in New Orleans and Las Vegas. Those were my only opportunities to rub elbows with the Steves and Bill and Paul (while waiting in the buffet lines). Ummmm----the hosted bar might also have been an inducement! ;-) (At the time, I worked for a company that produced products for both Microsoft and Apple computers).

Cool!

When I worked for Kurzweil, I recall one show where I had just finished making a presentation to a small group of people -- sent them away chuckling (I had a good spiel with a few risque comments that were designed to get that chuckle). Mid-presentation, Ray walked up so he caught the tail end of it.

Once they had left, we exchanged pleasantries and he casually asked me how my presentation had gone. I shrugged, "Nothing unusual". Apparently, the "distinguished gentleman" in the group was HEW Sec'y (who was our largest -- if not *sole* -- customer).

"Oh", I replied. :>

I used to enjoy the CES shows, most. Lots of really neat *toys* (esp if you "knew the right people" to get into the "private" showings -- as well as *not* knowing the "wrong" people so you could get past the guards!). But, I think I have become jaded in my outlook so that very little is really "amazing" nowadays.

OTOH, the "stars" in the, er, "software" hall were always eye-openers! I imagine more than a few divorces followed those shows! :-/
