Hardware needed to Program Atmel AT89C51 using Flip

Dec 16, 2005 2 Replies

Does this chip come pre-programmed with a bootloader? It seems from the datasheet that all thats needed to program it (in-system) is the use of Atmel's FLIP software, and no mention of any hardware requirements (PSEN, etc).

Is it that easy?

Which specific Atmel AT89C51 variant ?

The AT89C51ED2 is quite clear in the data, on the Loader options, and Fuse/Pin force options ?

At least some have a bootloader. Then you only need FLIP and and RS232 to TTL interface (maybe already on your board). To enter the bootloader, you need to pull PSEN to the right level when reset is deactivated, so a switch controlling PSEN and a reset button are nice to have. And make sure you set the BLJB to the correct value in FLIP or your application won't start.
