I am looking for free running timer, i searched in Google but i dint get exact functionality.
Could any one please explain the functionality of 8-bit Free Running timer in step by step with any example. Or provide me any nice material ..that would be a great help for me.
Presently i am doing a protocol mapping on FPGA so need to understand....

5 hits were very very useful.Google again. When I google'd for "Free Running Counter FPGA", I got exactly what you should be looking for.

Would that not depend on the device you were using? They are all different. Look it up in the manual for the microcontroller/fpga/ip you are using - it will surely give you step by step instructions on how to use it.
