I'd like to use an ATxmega for a new design. The datasheet still says 'Preliminary' and my local distributor (Netherlands) says production qty's are available in Q1 2009.
Any experiences or other knowledge I should know about? Ulf?

Look at the discussions on the AVR Freaks forum. The few chips that have been sampled are full of bugs.

This seems to be a a case of two planets.
On Planet Atmel-Marketing, the XMEGA is such a stupendous success, it already has a magazine award!! Atmel's XMEGA MCU Awarded Product of the Year by Electronic Products Magazine : "Since its introduction in early 2008, there have been over 400 design wins to validate this award."
However, on Planet Earth, the Late Nov Atmel Selector Guide says "sampling'' on only one pair of 100 pin devices, and all others say
1Q/2Q or even 3Q 2009!! FindChips.com. also hear on earth, shows no stock anywhere.On paper the xmega has some nice peripheral features, but if you intend to actually produce a product (and not merely be design-win ~429, on PAM) you might want to get some silicon, and an errata sheet, in your earthly hands !

Thanks for your input Jim. I really could do with the 7 or 8 uarts on that chip, but for now 4 would be ok too, so I decided to use an ATmega1280 and just live with the idea of having 90 unused I/O pins... :-)

That would be the safe pathway - design with what you can get, but allow the PCB option to replace with a XMega when they become 'more real'. I see digikey has prices entered for even some 44 pin ones, but no lead-times..

If you want *lots* of UARTs look at the XMOS chips, or the Parallax Propeller.

I am also thinking of using the ATXMega, also because of the 8 serial ports. In my last big project I used the AT90USB128 part and used a gate array for the serial ports. The gate array worked well for the serial ports and the 256 byte buffers removed the need for IRQ.
For the ATXMega I was quoted two weeks delivery for sample parts and March for quantity, but I am stil awaiting conformation. Digi-key refused even to quote them outside the USA! I will let you know what I hear next week.
