5V/3V Current at I/O pin Question

Hi All.

What happens in terms of current consumption / flow if one were to, say, drive a CMOS latch that's powered at 5V from an MSP430 output with the MSP430 operating at 3V?

Obviously the latch will correctly see logic 0 (0V) and logic 1 (3V, >

5V/2). But what about current consumption?

Will there be a non-negligible current flowing when the MSP430 outputs a 3V "into" the latch operating at 5V?

Or is it no different from having both the latch and the MSP430 running at 3V, so current is non-zero only during switching?

Thanks,
